Westeros has enjoyed a few centuries of peace since the Baratheons took the Iron Throne. The summers have been long and pleasant, the winters mild and short. There have been no wars.
The current summer has lasted fifteen years and it seems as though it may stretch on for ages.
It has been a time of plenty for even the small folk. However for the nobility, who never have to worry overmuch about starving to death, this time of plenty has also been a time of extreme boredom. With no wars to die in, no important marriage pacts to make, and the succession passing easily as it should from father to son, people are growing restless.
However now the succession seems more uncertain then it has since before the Baratheons took the crown. King Robert Baratheon IV has recently passed away from heart problems he developed from his poor dietary habits. He left behind a grieving wife, and two kids. His son David Baratheon, his heir, at age sixteen; and his younger daughter.
Though David is now King, the matter of succession is still uncertain. He is well past the age that princes are usually betrothed, and he seems reluctant to agree to any of his mother's selections.
There are rumors, whispered for if the wrong ear heard them you could be tried for treason, that the Queen would have better luck showing her son the young lords, not the young ladies. Whether or not this is true is still unknown, however if it is, it could make David's claim to the Iron Throne invalid. With no brothers the question of who the crown would pass to next has everyone pondering.
